Traumatic events are situations that give rise to intense fear, hopelessness or horror. These events are often characterised by their unpredictability and the lack of power and helplessness people experience during them. Trauma counselling is a way for people to process traumatic experiences, heal from them and be able to regain a sense of safety and control in their lives.

Traumatic events come in all shapes and sizes. Some common examples include:

  • Acts of violence
  • Childhood physical or sexual abuse
  • Sexual assault
  • Natural disasters
  • Car accidents

The lack of power experienced by many people results in feelings of shame and guilt. Individuals may be left feeling not powerful enough and guilty even though they may not have been able to do anything to prevent the traumatic event. For people who have experienced serious trauma or repeated trauma it may become difficult to trust others or feel confident about the future. People who have experienced trauma may also find it difficult to regulate their feelings subsequent to the traumatic event.

Being exposed to trauma can in some cases result in post traumatic stress disorder. People experiencing PTSD may have some of the following symptoms:

  • Episodes of re-experiencing the trauma e.g. flashbacks, dreams, bodily responses as if the trauma were happening
  • Avoiding things that are associated or reminiscent of the trauma (including avoiding thoughts and feelings)
  • Difficulty staying or falling asleep
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability and outbursts of anger
  • Hypervigilance (always being on alert and being easily startled)

Trauma counselling should always be performed by skilled practitioner who has extensive knowledge of the body of research on trauma. If you choose a member of the team at Paul the Counsellor for trauma counselling you will be treated sensitively by someone who knows about trauma and who will work with you at your own pace to regain a sense of safety and control.
