Mental Health Counselling
Mental health issues are relatively common. About one in five Australians experiences a mental health issue.
Treatment for mental health issues often involves contact with several different kinds of mental health and medical professionals. Each of these professionals have different and often overlapping roles. GPs, psychologists and psychiatrists generally make the diagnosis of a mental health issue. GPs and psychiatrists prescribe and monitor medications when needed. Psychologists provide focused psychological strategies like cognitive behaviour therapy to address symptoms. Counsellors and psychotherapists provide support and treatment for people experiencing mental health issues using talk therapy.
Common mental health issues include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Personality disorders
Research demonstrates that counselling and psychotherapy is an effective treatment for many mental health issues. Findings almost always show that psychotherapy plus medication is more effective than medication alone. Simply put, including counselling and psychotherapy in the treatment for a mental health issue is going to reduce symptoms and improve the outcome of treatment.
Each of the counsellors and psychotherapists at Paul the Counsellor takes an approach to mental health issues that is destigmatizing and humanistic. We see medication as your decision and do not advocate for you to take it or not take it. We see mental health issues as complex entities that have multiple factors that contribute to them. We work with you to provide support and explore those factors working towards getting you feeling and functioning the best you can.
